How to stop glorifying busyness?

My friends, I write this post in love as if we were chatting over a chai latte. I feel so passionate and heavy hearted the way we live our lives as if we are in a hamster wheel, with the pressure of such a full schedule weighing us down. I don’t think this is the way we should be living.

In my latest video I share my thoughts on the whole glorifying busy thing our world loves to do and how a book I recently read impacted my perspective (read to the end of the post for resources on this topic)

There was a time in my life when I was waking up at 5am and living a full day just before going to school, I filled those early hours of my day with good things like exercise, practicing the recorder and reading my Bible then I’d go on to an 8 hours school day and then straight to extra curriculars then homework and projects and other normal appointments. I spent my weekends doing more school work and the cycle went on and on. My life was filled with good things and for most people a go go go schedule works for them. But my life came crumbling, I got so burnt out. Long story short the burn out actually brought to the surface a whole lot of mental health issues and physical health issues. A few years later I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and this really flipped my world upside. I was forced to rest because thats one of the main ways you recover from this chronic illness.

I felt extreme guilt for cutting back my schedule, watching many more episode of series and resting daily. You don’t hear people share about how the rested during the day, if you ask how someone’s day was, you’ll hear a list of things they accomplished that day. But when you physically can’t leave the house or exercise anymore, rest becomes a priority.

Now I don’t wish for anyone to struggle through a chronic illness and I know my relationship and journey with rest is not the average case (when is my journey ever straight forward, haha) but I share this part of my life with you to emphasise how prioritising rest is vital.

I am not telling you to give up everything and never leave the house or to stop working hard-the Bible is very clear that God does not want us to be lazy. What I am asking you is to reevaluate what balance looks in your life, how are you using your yeses and is rest even on your radar?

What you fill your time with is ultimately your choice, you get to use your yeses and no’s. This is not me telling you to just focus on yourself because we are called to love our neighbours as ourselves and we shouldn’t neglect serving others.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’There is no commandment greater than these.”-Mark 12:30-31 NIV

But how are we going to serve others when we have nothing to give because we are running on empty. It’s time to start intentionally filling our calendars instead of chasing praise and achievements through our schedule. Include rest in your to do list, allocate time to fill yourself up and recharge.

    Hi Hannah! What a wonderful post! Present Over Perfect is one of my favorite books! You’re so right about how we can’t run on empty. Chasing productivity and achievements can easily fill up our calendars (it really can feel like a hamster wheel), and if we are not careful to keep a balance, those things can cost us our peace and rest. Thanks for the reminder to stop glorifying busyness!
