pursuing dreams

How to find your why when pursuing dreams?

February 4, 2019

I’ve always been a dreamer. Ever since I was a little girl, my heart gripped the brush of my imagination and painted a blank-canvas-future filled with impossibilities. Writing books, traveling, speaking at conferences, meeting new friends, and working from home – many of which have come true!

Though I am far from my “dream life”, so to speak, I am much closer than I was six years ago, when I started this blogging journey.

Pursuing our God-given dreams is such a wild and wonderful journey to be on. Yet I find it’s all-too-easy to grow discouraged along the way.

There were moments I wanted to give up. Moments I was sure my words weren’t reaching anyone. Moments I was tempted to throw in the towel, give up on my dreams, and pursue a more “conventional” path.

But then, a voice deep within, stirring like the roar of a lion, reminded of my simple purpose.

He reminded me of my WHY.

The Silent Battle Cry

Fight on, fighter, don’t let anyone steal your fire…” for King and Country’s lyrics float through my headphones.

We live in a culture that tells us life is all about instant gratification. That anything worth having, we should have right now. But Jesus teaches something far different, and the ways of His Kingdom are a little backwards and upside down.

Anything worth having, is worth waiting for. It’s worth fighting for. It’s worth taking daily, action steps, stepping forward, again and again, standing on faith, even when our hearts are weak.

If we want to pursue and accomplish the dreams God has placed in our hearts, we must be bold and courageous. Like Joshua taking the Promise Land, we need to fight. We need to stand and drive out the enemy, little by little.

Exodus 23:30 says: “Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land.”

Um, little by little?

No, I like microwave fast! I like snapping my fingers and seeing a dream come true. But that’s not how things work.

God calls us to have patience and persistence on this journey.

So what do we do when we feel like giving up? When the “little by little” progress is taking FAR longer what we’d prefer?

We return to our why: our silent battle cry.

We see this in Christ, when He endured the most horrific battle of all: death on the Cross.

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the JOY set before him, He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)

For the joy set before Him, He endured.

And we are called to do the same.

pursuing dreams

Following Christ, is going to require some serious sacrifice. But if we fix our hearts on the JOY set before us, the inner flame of zeal and purpose, will never be extinguished. We can face every trial that comes our way and resist the temptation to give up, because we know the prize is so, so worth it.

So what is your why? What is the joy set before you? What is that invisible thread pulling you forward, that string of love, that chord of hope, that continues to tug on your heart? If you’re a Christian,Jesus is the anchor for your soul. He is the reason we can keep going, when everyone else quits. (Hebrews 16:9.)

He wants to strengthen us and sharpen our vision for the days ahead. But this hope, this deep anchor in Christ, is meant to go so much deeper than our prayer life: He wants us to take all this love, this faith, this endurance and fulfil the great commission: go into all the earth and make disciples! As Christians, we know this is our mission. His love is our silent war cry.

Therefore we can’t give up. We will never give up. If He is for us, who can be against us?!

Knowing Your Why

Before we set out to pursue a dream, we must know why we are doing it. Every path is covered with obstacles: deadly snakes, steep inclines, horrible weather, dry sprouts, loneliness, disillusionment, pride – the path to following our God-given dreams can be dangerous!

But we don’t have to do it alone. The Holy Spirit is our helper and He will remind us of our why. He will help us focus on the joy set before us, and whisper to our hearts to keep moving forward.

God has called each of His children to different paths. We’re all called to impact the world in a divinely unique way. For those who have the gift of writing, the call to change the world with their words, stirs deep in their blood. I believe blogging is a beautiful way to serve the Lord with this gift.

Starting a blog isn’t an easy task. While it’s absolutely rewarding, and the prize is as rich as they come: it’s not for the faint of heart. Sometimes, in life, it’s easy to bounce around from one project to the next: starting a new endeavour, then growing discouraged, or distracted, and forgetting why we set out on that path in the first place.

Blogging is similar to farming. In the beginning, there’s a lot of work that has to be done, plowing your field, choosing a web platform, making plans, setting up your design, choosing what “seeds” to plant (aka, what you’re going to write about) and getting everything ready. Then, you have those first few days, where we’re you’re SO excited, your blog is done, your first post is ready, and your farm is officially open for business, woot woot!

But then: nothing happens.

You stare at the seeds you’ve planted and ask, “Wait, what’s going on? Am I doing something wrong? Why isn’t anything happening? Why isn’t anyone commenting? Why don’t I have any email subscribers?”

Days pass. And then weeks. And then MONTHS and still, nothing has happened. And that’s where so many bloggers give up. They lose sight of the prize, and forget why they started blogging in the first place.

But for those who endure, for those who remember their WHY, their purpose, and cling to their silent battle cry of faithfulness: they reap a beautiful reward! Seeds begin to sprout, readers begin to come, connections are made, and lives are changed!

Friends, this is how I started. One word, one post, one day at a time. My dreams of traveling, writing books, speaking at events, and making income from my blog seemed so far off. But, little by little, I kept with it. And now, I’ve seen a harvest. I’ve tasted first hand the prize that come from blogging, and oh my goodness friends, it is so, so worth it!

God has done SO much in my life through blogging, and I believe there are many others out there in which He desires to do the same.
